RollTape

4-Track Mobile Recorder

Overview

RollTape is a four-track recorder for iPhone. Record a base track, then overdub additional tracks on top while monitoring the previous ones through your speaker or headphones. Mix, undo, and export when you’re done.

Works with the built-in iPhone mic, wired headset mic, and USB audio interfaces.

Tracks

Each track has its own channel strip with arm, mute, volume fader, pan knob, and VU meter.

ARM

Selects the track for recording. Only one track can be armed at a time. Tap an armed track again to disarm it. Arming is only available when the transport is stopped.

MUTE

Silences the track during playback and recording. Muted tracks are excluded from the mix and export.

VOLUME FADER

Sets the playback level for the track. Drag up to increase, down to decrease. Does not affect the recorded audio only monitoring and export levels.

PAN KNOB

Positions the track in the stereo field. Center by default. Affects monitoring and export. Drag left or right to pan.

VU METER

Shows the live signal level input level while recording, playback level otherwise.

Transport Controls

Two rows of buttons control playback and recording.

REC PLAY STOP
REC

Starts recording on the armed track. All other non-muted tracks play back simultaneously. Tap again to stop.

PLAY

Plays back all non-muted tracks from the current position. Tap again to stop.

STOP

Stops recording or playback. If recording, the take is processed and saved to the track immediately.

RTZ UNDO REDO SAVE
RTZ

Return to Zero moves the playhead back to the beginning of the session.

UNDO

Removes the most recently recorded take and restores the previous audio. One level of undo per track.

REDO

Restores a take that was removed with Undo.

SAVE

Opens the export and session management options.

Recording Your First Track
  1. Tap ARM on Track 1. The button lights up to confirm it is selected.
  2. Press REC. After a brief countdown the recording begins.
  3. Play or sing your part. Watch the VU meter to confirm the mic is picking up signal.
  4. Press STOP when finished. The recording is processed and saved to Track 1.
  5. Press PLAY to hear it back.
Overdubbing Additional Tracks
  1. Press RTZ to return to the beginning (or leave the playhead where you want to start).
  2. Tap ARM on the next empty track for example, Track 2.
  3. Press REC. Track 1 plays back while Track 2 records.
  4. Play your part in time with what you hear, then press STOP.
  5. Press PLAY to hear both tracks together. Repeat for Tracks 3 and 4.
Tip: Recording with headphones gives tighter overdub sync because the round-trip latency is lower. If monitoring through the speaker, use the Sync Trim control to dial in the offset.
Overdub Sync Trim

When you record an overdub while listening to the speaker or headphones, the new track can land a few milliseconds late due to the round-trip audio delay through the iPhone hardware. Sync Trim corrects for this.

Where to find it: A thin bar between the tape counter and the channel strips in portrait mode, and below the status label in landscape mode.

− SYNC TRIM: +15ms +

How to calibrate:

  1. Record a sharp, repeating click or hand clap on Track 1.
  2. Arm Track 2. Press REC and play the same click in time with what you hear.
  3. Play both tracks back. If Track 2 sounds late, tap + a few times.
  4. Record another test take and listen again. Adjust until they sit tightly together.

Each tap moves the offset by 5ms. Range is −50ms to +50ms. Most iPhones land between +10ms and +30ms. The value is saved automatically and persists across sessions calibrate once per device.

Note: If you switch to a USB audio interface, you may need to re-calibrate. Hardware latency varies by device.
Session Management
NEW SESSION

Clears all four tracks and starts fresh. You will be prompted to confirm before any audio is discarded.

OPEN SESSION

Browse previously saved sessions and load one into the current project.

SAVE SESSION

Saves the current session all four tracks, volume, pan, and mute settings under a name you choose.

EXPORT MIX

Renders all non-muted tracks to a stereo 24-bit WAV file with mild mastering applied. Share via AirDrop, Files, or any app.

Stems export: The Export screen also includes an option to export individual tracks as separate WAV files, timeline-aligned for import into any DAW.
Using a USB Microphone or Interface

Record Ready works with USB audio interfaces and USB microphones connected via Lightning or USB-C. iOS handles routing automatically when you plug in, the app detects the route change and switches over.

If the app appears to still be using the built-in mic after connecting a USB device, tap the 📱 button in the header to refresh the input routing.

Set input gain on the hardware interface itself. Re-calibrate Sync Trim when switching between the built-in mic and a USB interface, as each has different hardware latency characteristics.

Tips
Headphones give tighter sync. Round-trip latency is lower through headphones your Sync Trim value will likely be smaller.
Keep levels out of the red. Aim for peaks in the upper-middle range of the VU meter. Clipping distorts the recording permanently.
Use Undo freely. Every track stores the previous take. Press UNDO and try again without losing what you had before.
Save before exporting. Save your session first so you can adjust levels or re-record a track before generating a final mix.
